The Fate of Eggware Social Chat (Matrix)

Yesterday I discovered that our Matrix server was broken in a new and exciting way. With people getting serious about moving off of Discord now I don't know if I can keep this up!! This is not manageable software on the scale that I'm working at. This is not the first time it has broken on me in a completely undiagnosable way. And I won't get into it unless you're truly curious but the forks are insane.

I'm going to try to keep our Matrix server up for a while as an archive for those who participated while it was alive. I take data preservation seriously. At the same time I am discontinuing support for it because it is driving me insane. I also will want to move it onto a separate subdomain.

This is not the end of chat. I'm looking into other options. I might take a little bit of everything for a spin and see where it goes.

I'm doing a trial run of Zulip which is similar but a little more Slack-like. It's not federated but the software is a lot stronger. If any subscribers are willing to stress test it with me lmk.

I'm running Stoat (previously Revolt) now. Working way better than anything I've tried before.

Zulip was still nice. Sort of a midpoint between a chat room and forums. I'd love to think of a use case for it but we have forums so I'll probably just pull it down later.

I'm working on Matrix again to see if I can fix the problem. I think I just needed to have some sort of backup option in the cards because I am feeling less mad about Matrix now.
