Will's Pikmin Hell
#1

I really need somewhere to post about my ongoing renewed Pikmin fixation so here it goes.

Recently I went to Walmart and they had a Pikmin 4 demo and that obsession has pretty much immediately taken over my life again. I haven't played a Nintendo game since Omega Ruby and I want to play this game so fucking bad. I can't justify it to myself but I want it

Anyway, since I made a pact with myself to not buy Nintendo titles anymore (NEARLY TEN YEARS!!!), I have been replaying Pikmin 2. (This is because I tried to play Pikmin 1 and the time limit made me feel like I was going to have a panic attack, but maybe I will go back and play Pikmin 1 later, idk)

I'm about 12 in-game "days" into Pikmin 2 and just hit 70% of the debt, so who knows how long this thread will even last, but maybe there's enough postgame stuff to keep me entertained, and I also have to finally try Pikmin 3 too so we'll see how that goes.

I DID NOT like Pikmin 3 when it first came out because I thought it made Olimar and Louie too mean and dumb respectively, but I will make myself try it and I will probably like it.

I have a Pikmin bag from Club Nintendo and it is in horrible condition and I have had it forever and it is my main bag that I carry everything in. I took it to church back during the stage of my life where I was going to church (I do not go to church anymore and I am not religious so don't ask me about it). The pattern was subtle enough that no one has ever really commented on it. It's just my Pikmin bag.

You could ask me anything and I would have a lot of opinions on it

Fiery Bulblax: I thought these things were scary as a kid I didn't like that they were melting and it looks like they're in pain

Breadbug: HATE HATE HATE INFINITY HATE WALKING TAKES FOOD. Funny. I never got far enough in the game to see them but I saw pictures of them online and they kind of scared me. Look like foreskin sorry

Giant Breadbug: Funniest boss music in any video game

Burrowing Snagret: very cool. I'm confused because I remember there being one in the overworld of Valley of Repose but is that not true. Oh wait yes it's true it's guarding a treasure I just have to find it. Thought it was scary they had a boss enemy in the overworld

Withering Blowhog: Annoying

Puffy Blowhog: Saw one for the first time today it's so BIG HOW IS IT SO BIG THAT'S SCARY. Its scientific name is "sus inflata"

I'm still meeting all of them

I'm so glad you're into Pikmin right now. It makes me so happy to see you enjoying it.

I heard Pikmin 3 Deluxe (the Switch version) was actually really good, and fixed a lot of the problems the original on Wii U had. Another loss for my beloved Wii U, I suppose. It was a really forgettable game to me, but the new version seems to be pretty widely enjoyed and comes with a lot more stuff to do.

Just finished Snagret Hole, and with that, maxed out Awakening Wood. And 80%. I'm getting way further in the game than I think I ever have before and it's pretty intimidating.

Which makes me wonder, wtf was I doing as a kid to get 30+ days into the game and still not even have the suit upgrades???

I've seen people say their issues with the dungeons are basically, you have to scope out each floor or your Pikmin will die, and the random generation is bullshit. I didn't really know what they meant until yesterday when I tried Subterranean Complex and actually had to leave halfway through because half my squad had already been wiped by fucking Cannon Beetles and bomb rocks.

Cannon Beetles: I hate them so fucking much. Why. Who thought, hey you know what would make this game better, fucking boulders that chase you. WHY. HOW

"Run away from boulder" is one of my least favorite video game obstacles. Do the ones from cannon beetles home on you?! That's terrifying.

Just finished the Shower Room, and with that, 100% of the debt. NOW I unlock Wistful Wild, which I didn't expect.

So now I'm wondering, can I fight the final boss w/o going to the dungeon with the Water Wraith? That shit just sounds unfun. I'll do it if I have to.

Anyway, the Pikmin world has weed:

Just finished Subterranean Complex, was fine (ok, I savestated), then ragequit when I wanted to start on Frontier Cavern and literally half of my 100-Pikmin squad got killed by fucking CANNON BEETLE BOULDER in the OVERWORLD. What the Fuuuuuuck

Wow, the difficulty spike in this game really is something, huh. I guess it makes sense for technically finishing the game, but wow, they really just throw everything at you once you get to the Wistful Wild.

There's an overworld treasure immediately in front of the entrance that requires 100 Purple Pikmin.

I don't even have 20..........

Finished Frontier Cavern and all I want is Bulbmin forever, they're my favorites now. I like them so much more than Pikmin. I'm sorry, Pikmin.

I did Submerged Castle.

Scary

stressed me out more than silent hill 3 at points, somehow

Bulbmin are so good. Also holy shit Submerged Castle is so stressful looking. That level gave me nightmares when I watched it on the playthrough of Pikmin 2 I watched as a kid.

I finished Pikmin 2 yesterday and today finally started on Pikmin 3.

Final thoughts on Pikmin 2: man, Wistful Wild is just a slog. The rest of the game is actually pretty fun, and in retrospect Submerged Castle is some of the most interesting gameplay you get, but Wistful Wild is just nonstop bullshit. Long, too. I like Pikmin as a pick-up-put-down game.

As for Pikmin 3 - I never liked it much, not of what I saw of it, but jeez, it's actually really good. More thoughts to come when I'm less depressed.

Quoting this from the wiki because I don't know how to better summarize it:

Quote:In Pikmin 3, Pikmin that carry a Burgeoning Spiderwort berry or nugget to the S.S. Drake, deliver a grape from the Dawn Pustules or Dusk Pustules, or fit a piece of a bridge or hay will start making their way back to the location they started carrying from. If there's nothing else to do there, they idle, but if there are more objects to collect, they will begin working on that automatically.

This is the worst part of the game. IMHO, just leave them at the spot they dropped the item off at, once the pile is empty. It's not like it's immersion-breaking, they can literally see the pile is empty, with their eyeballs. I don't know I just hate asking myself "why am I missing 20 Pikmin" and they're out standing in their field

I finished Pikmin 3 in two days... I don't think I was playing it any faster or more heavily than Pikmin 2. So I guess I would say, what was there was really good, but it was REALLY short.

Now I'm waiting on Pikmin 4 to come in the mail and then I can finally meet my best friend Oatchi

Sorry folks I have been playing Pikmin 4

I forced myself to take a break from Pikmin 4 in hopes that it would get me to do something else so I finished Pikmin 1!

It's actually a surprisingly good game. I wish I had given it more of a fair shake, but 2->3->4->1 actually feels like a natural way to proceed, because the other games familiarize you with a lot of the concepts that go towards playing the first game really well.

Olimar and Louie like each other. I'm not being sentimental, this is textual and factual. Fandom's view of them as hating each other deeply perplexes me.

They are both definitely thinking "thank god im the only normal one here" though

And I mean Louie is objectively wrong but he's thinking it
